Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report January 4, 2019

Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report: Blue Mesa and the Gunnison valley have been consistently into the -10 to -20 range for lows over the last week!  We have seen Cebolla basin completely cap in the last day, but ice thickness varies as the edges froze first and the center froze last.  Fish-able ice can still be found from the Iola Boat Ramp area west to a little west of the Elk Creek Boat ramp area.  As always, use extreme caution when exploring new ice!!!  Fishing for rainbow and brown trout has been consistent and good most days on spoons and soft plastics tipped with a meal worm or wax worm.  Lake trout have been showing up across most of the areas with safe ice and are most consistently being caught on 2-5″ tube jigs tipped with sucker meat. A lot of red salmon were being caught at first ice, but not many silvers have shown up so far.  We are hoping they are hanging out in the western basins that don’t have safe ice yet!   Due to low water levels, Blue Mesa Reservoir is virtually a whole new lake and the fish are hanging out in different areas so don’t be afraid to explore!  Open water still spans most of the area west of Middle bridge, but it won’t be long if temperatures continue to dip well into the negatives!  That’s our Blue Mesa ice fishing report for January 4, 2019.  Follow our facebook and instagram pages to see some of the fish we have been catching (including some monsters)!
