Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report: A little ice and a lot of open water!

Blue Mesa reservoir is slowly but surely building ice.  The lake is down about 55′ so the lake looks a little different heading in to this ice season.  The Gunnison River inlet starts about 1000 yards west of the Lake City bridge and there is a chunk of ice that’s 6″+ here.  Be careful as the water is very shallow in these mud flats, except for in the Gunnison River Channel.  There is a small chunk of ice at Old Stevens that is 3-4″ and a lot of new ice along most of the shorelines in Iola and into the canyon that is all skim ice to 1″ thick.  The middle is all still open and Dry Creek westward to the dam is all still open water with boat launching allowed from 7-4:30 at Elk Creek and Lake Fork boat ramps!  Trout fishing has been very very good and opportunities for other species are options from shore and for those who are willing to brave the cold and take the boat out!  ALWAYS use extreme caution on early ice and fish with a partner.  It has been 0 to -3 degrees most mornings in the Gunnison Valley so more ice should be building soon!
