Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report: Cold weather…HOT Fishing!

Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report: Cold weather…HOT Fishing!

It has been consistently cold in the Gunnison basin, but ice progress has been slow.  The Iola basin is completely capped with 6-12″ of ice!  This extends West in to the canyon and then a new layer of ice that is 1-4″ and somewhat inconsistent has formed East of Dry Creek to just West of Elk Creek.  The coves in this section tend to have the thicker ice.  Be very CAUTIOUS if you venture out in these areas!  So far, the trout fishing has been nothing short of excellent most days in most areas on most baits!  It is arguably some of the best ice fishing we have seen in a very long time and it usually doesn’t take much effort to figure out on any given day!  This is a great time to get kids out on some great action as it is sure to engage their attention!  A few yellow perch and lake trout have been mixed in with the trout, but we haven’t spent much time chasing anything else so far.

Cebebolla Basin westward is still open water and the Lake Fork boat ramp is still open for boat launching!  Be Safe, be smart, and have a very Merry Christmas!!!!
