Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report

Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Report: It has been a warm Colorado fall, but we still have some safe ice on about a mile of the Blue Mesa inlet where the Gunnison River enters the reservoir.  The ice is 8-10″ thick and turns to open water right around the Lake City Bridge.  As I write this report, there is no snow on the ice and it is very slick!  Fishing has been excellent for stocker rainbow trout with a mix of bigger rainbow trout, some brown trout, and the occasional yellow perch as well!  There have also been a few suckers showing up on unusual baits, like the one Glenn caught below! Small spoons like the Pk Flutter-fish,  Dx lures spoon, and kastmasters tipped with a meal worm or wax worm have all been working!  Most fish have been hanging out in 12-22 feet of water.  Stay tuned for more Colorado Ice fishing reports on Blue Mesa reservoir as cold temperatures help cap the rest of the lake!

Is there a current ice report for Blue Mesa reservoir? I’m headed there the first week of March & wondering if bringing ice gear is a good idea? Thanks!!
