Our Trophy Fish Policy:

Sport Fish Colorado is a major advocate for releasing all trophy fish. Our waters are receiving more pressure than ever before and trophy fish don’t grow to trophy size over night so it is important to make the ethical decision to maintain trophy fisheries at Antero, Taylor, and Blue Mesa reservoirs. Sport Fish Colorado will take appropriate measurements and a photo or two for a replica mount, but all species of the following dimensions will be released to grow and fight another day!

  • Lake Trout – 22” and greater
  • Northern Pike – 26” and greater
  • Brown Trout – 20” and greater
  • Rainbow Trout – 20” and greater

About our Colorado Ice Fishing Trips

Ice fishing in Colorado is usually perceived as a cold way to spend a weekend afternoon, but with the latest technology, ice fishing can be a comfortable experience and some of the hottest fishing of the year! When you book a trip with Sport Fish Colorado you get to enjoy top of the line Frabil ice huts and Mr. Heater buddy heaters to keep you warm. We also have the latest Lowrance sonar technology accompanied by our knowledge and experience on Antero, Blue Mesa, Tarryall, and Taylor reservoirs, to keep you on the fish!

Once we find the fish, we use Strikemaster power augers to drill through the thickest of ice! Ice fishing in Colorado is an exciting way to break up a ski week or just try something new. Ice fishing is an experience that you will enjoy and never forget!

A full day trip is usually about six hours long. We can focus on quality or quantity and cater the trips to your expectations.  Once you book a trip, we will meet at an agreed-upon time and either walk or snowmobile to our spot depending upon the regulations at the designated body of water (Blue Mesa and Taylor Reservoirs allow snowmobiles). Your guide will then get you set up and dialed in on the bite with all of the bait, tackle, and equipment you need. Once you are set up, the guide will check nearby spots for fish to make sure you are always on the action. He will be at your beck and call at all times.

Our goal is to give you a safe, first-class experience with memories that will last a lifetime!  To book a Colorado ice fishing trip on Antero, Blue Mesa, Tarryall, or Taylor reservoir please call the number below! A 50% deposit is required at the time of the booking.

Colorado Ice Fishing Action Trips

Multi-species

A lot of our Ice Fish Colorado clients don’t have a preference on species, they just want to be comfortable and have action! On these trips we focus on keeping the rod bent and putting fish on the ice. Once we set up the ice hut and get the heater going, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Cutbows, Cutthroat Trout, Yellow Perch, Lake Trout, and Kokanee salmon are all possibilities depending on the body of water we fish. Catches may vary from 10 to 20+ fish a trip and we will clean and bag your daily bag limit of fish within our catch and keep slot. These trips usually start around 6:30-7 a.m. and run for 6 hours, but start times are flexible.

Yellow Perch

Yellow Perch have mysteriously shown up in a lot of Colorado’s mountain lakes and reservoirs. Regardless, some bodies of water are seeing growing populations of perch and some healthy sizes at that! Schools of these fish can be hard to find at times, but once located, they can provide unbelievable action! Yellow Perch make for a fun Colorado Ice Fishing trip, but they are also some of the best-eating fish in Colorado! On these trips our focus is yellow perch, but at times we will catch a mix of trout as well. Ice Fish Colorado guides will clean and bag 5 perch, 8 inches or bigger per person as well as any trout we get into within legal limits. This can be a great trip for kids! These trips usually start around 6:30-7 a.m. and run for 6 hours, but start times are flexible.

Kokanee Salmon

When our Colorado lakes and reservoirs host good populations of Kokanee Salmon, focusing on these fish can provide an action-packed ice fishing trip! We use several techniques to attract these curious fish to our fishing area and once a school comes in, limits can be caught quickly! Most of the time some Rainbow trout will be feeding in the same areas as the salmon, making for a mixed bag. Right now our best salmon fishing is on Blue Mesa reservoir where the limit is 5 salmon per person per day. Reports show anticipation for a good year for Kokanee Salmon ice fishing in 2017. We will clean and bag your limit of salmon as well as a few trout if you desire. These trips usually start around 6:30-7 a.m. and run for 6 hours, but start times are flexible.

Trophy Colorado Ice Fishing Trips

Colorado Lake Trout

Big Colorado lake trout (30”+) are smart and can live up to 60 years! Finding these fish requires a “run & gun” style approach, sometimes fishing in the elements, and a lot of patience. This trophy Colorado ice fishing trip is not for the faint at heart. It is focused on quality and you may only get a bite or two a day, but it is typically going to be from fish in the 12-30 lbs+ range! Do you have what it takes to be ready when opportunity knocks? We will get a length, girth, weight and some pictures for you to remember your fish of a lifetime! We release all lake trout over 24” to preserve our fisheries and provide future opportunities! These trips usually start around 6:30-7 a.m. and run for 6 hours. (All trophy trips are an additional $100)

Colorado Pike

Colorado is home to several fantastic Northern Pike fisheries that can grow fish to nearly 4 feet long! Our pike are well-fed and smarter than Canadian pike, but as a result, they tend to be more girthy and weigh more! Ice fishing for these monster Colorado fish requires patience and covering a lot of water, but the reward is often a memory you will never forget! Our goal on these trips is to land a fish over 30”, but 40”+ Northern Pike get hooked up frequently! The trick is being patient while landing these fish on a hand line. Are you up for the challenge? We will get a length, girth, weight and some pictures for you to remember your fish of a lifetime! We release all pike over 26” to preserve our fisheries and provide future opportunities! These trips usually start around 6:30-7 a.m. and run for 6 hours. (All trophy trips are an additional $100)
