Blue Mesa Ice Fishing Conditions Report

Blue Mesa ice has actually gotten thicker over the last week with the recent cold snap!  We now have 10-16″ of ice from the Lake City bridge to Elk Creek.  Use caution around the rocky points at Elk Creek as they have thinner ice.  Fishing has been fair to good depending on the day and the cold front coming through.  We have seen some slower fishing leading up to and during the storms and some excellent fishing as the storms leave our area, which is completely backward!  Trout have been showing up along the rocky shorelines in 12-30 feet of water and in coves.  The salmon bite has been on fire some days and slow on others, but these fish are cruising 10-40′ deep over deeper water.  We have seen a lot of good action in the canyon from North Willow Creek to Dry Creek.  Lake trout have been showing up in 40-80 feet of water and the classic white or glow 3″ tube with a chunk of sucker meat has been the best producer.

**Our Family Fishing Tournament is this Saturday, March 3 at the Iola boat ramp!  One-Hundred percent of the entries are paid out in cash to our winners!  Last year first place for each category took home $300.  We also have some great prizes to give away from Wright & McGill and Gene Taylors!  Entry is only $20 per individual and $30 per family and there will be free hot dogs and chips at weigh-in!  To register, call Jonathan 970-209-6098 or show up at the Iola boat ramp at 6 on Saturday!  Good luck!
